Tallinn's #1 roadside assistance

Fuel assistance and delivery in Tallinn

Autoabi Tallinnas handles fuel problems in Tallinn and Harju County: gelled winter diesel, the wrong fuel in a tank, air in the fuel system and an empty tank at the roadside.

Each problem needs a different response. We ask whether the car stopped after refuelling, stood outside overnight in the cold or shows an empty tank. Treating the wrong problem can damage the fuel system.

Fuel assistance and related work

We resolve fuel problems in four ways. From 2011 to 2025, we attended 5,817 fuel-assistance calls: we delivered fuel to 3,286 cars, warmed gelled diesel on 1,207 calls, bled 763 fuel systems and drained 561 tanks after misfuelling.

  • Assistance with gelled diesel fuel; the van carries diesel anti-gel additive during winter.

    Help with gelled diesel

When paraffin crystals clog the fuel filter in freezing weather, we warm the filter and fuel lines so the diesel engine can start.

We heat a gelled filter with a hot-air gun for 20 minutes. After autumn refuelling, summer diesel may still be in the tank during the first hard frost and gels at a higher temperature than winter diesel.

  • Gloved technician bleeding a fuel system at the filter; air bubbles can be seen clearing from the hand pump's transparent tube.

    Bleeding the fuel system

We remove air that entered the fuel lines after the tank ran dry or the filter was changed and is preventing the engine from starting.

For newer common-rail diesels, diagnostic equipment commands the injectors to purge air. Repeatedly pressing Start will not clear it from the lines.

  • Fuel drained after misfuelling is collected in a sealed 60-litre tank in the van, rather than open cans.

    Draining the wrong fuel

If petrol has gone into a diesel car or diesel into a petrol car, we drain the tank and fuel lines before the first attempt to start.

If you suspect misfuelling, do not start the engine, even briefly. Just a few seconds of cranking can carry the wrong fuel into the injectors.

Fuel assistance prices

The dispatcher confirms the final price before dispatch, based on whether the fuel has gelled, is the wrong type or has run out. Travel within Tallinn is included.

ServicePrice
Fuel deliveryfrom €40 plus fuel
Warming gelled diesel fuelfrom €45
Bleeding the fuel systemfrom €40
Pumping out the wrong fuelfrom €90
Travel from our base within Tallinnincluded in the price

The following factors affect the price the most:

  • Amount in the tank: a full tank takes longer to drain than a half-empty one.
  • Engine type: common-rail diesels are bled with diagnostic equipment; older engines use a hand pump.
  • Whether the engine was cranked after misfuelling, which determines how far the wrong fuel may have travelled.
  • Fuel-filter access: a filter inside the tank requires more disassembly.
  • Location: reaching a car on a distant Harju County road takes longer than attending a city callout.

How long does fuel assistance take?

Warming gelled diesel takes 20 minutes with a hot-air gun. We heat the filter and fuel lines externally until the paraffin crystals melt and fuel flows freely again.

Bleeding a fuel system takes 15 minutes with a hand pump, or 25 minutes on a common-rail diesel that needs diagnostic equipment.

Draining the wrong fuel and flushing lines takes 40 minutes if the engine has not been started. If it has been cranked, the job takes 70 minutes because the injectors also need checking.

We respond to enquiries by phone within 10 minutes and reach cars within Tallinn in 28 minutes. Separate fuel cans in the van allow delivery on the first visit. Fuel-assistance work took 18 minutes on site on average; we attended 524 fuel calls in 2025.

Draining misfuelled diesel near Rocca al Mare Shopping Centre

Customer: Sander J., driving a rented diesel van for a move. Location: near Rocca al Mare Shopping Centre, Haabersti; order no. 83,941.

1. Call and symptoms: on a Saturday in May, the driver put 25 litres of petrol into the diesel van at a filling station. The dispatcher confirmed that the engine had not been started and the ignition had not been switched on.

2. Treatment: the technician drained the tank and flushed the fuel lines in 40 minutes, before any attempt to start.

3. The fuel was drained beside the pump; the driver then filled up with 30 litres of diesel at the same station.

4. Engine check: after starting, the technician observed five minutes of smooth idling.

Price: Draining the wrong fuel 1 × €90.00 = €90.00; weekend visit 1 × €13.00 = €13.00; travel within Tallinn €0.00 (included). Total €103.00, including 24% VAT of €19.94. The driver paid the station for the diesel.

Time: The technician arrived 28 minutes after the call ended. On site: 40 minutes to drain and flush, plus five minutes to check the idling engine; 45 minutes in total (2026).

Result: The engine started on the first attempt with clean diesel, and the moving van left 73 minutes after the call ended.

Our Work Process

Three steps from your call to a running engine.

  1. 1. Call and symptoms

We ask whether the engine will not start, starts then stops, or has a low-fuel light on the dashboard. We also ask what fuel was last put in and when, to distinguish gelled fuel, misfuelling and air in the lines before dispatch.

  2. 2. Treat the problem in order

For suspected misfuelling, we drain the tank before starting the engine. For gelled diesel, we warm the filter and lines. We bleed older engines with a hand pump and common-rail diesels with diagnostic equipment.

  3. 3. Check five minutes of idling

We start the engine and watch it idle for five minutes to ensure it will not stall again. On-site fuel-system work has a six-month written warranty, with terms on the receipt.

Identify the fuel problem

Different symptoms help the dispatcher choose the right equipment during your call.

Gelled diesel

A diesel with gelled fuel cranks but will not start after a night much colder than previous ones. Winter diesel sold at Estonian filling stations from December to February withstands temperatures down to −26°C; summer diesel left in the tank from autumn can gel at −5°C.

Wrong Fuel

Misfuelling becomes apparent just after filling up and attempting to start: the engine may make unusual noises or stop quickly. Cold weather is not the cause.

Air in the fuel system

Air can enter the lines after a tank runs completely dry or a filter is changed. The engine starts briefly, then stops until the air is bled out. The fuel level in the tank is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is gelled diesel different from the wrong fuel?

Gelled fuel is summer diesel that has thickened in the cold because it gels at a higher temperature than winter diesel. Misfuelling results from putting the wrong type in the tank, with symptoms appearing immediately after refuelling in any weather.

What to do if I got the wrong fuel?

Do not crank the engine, even briefly: that can carry the wrong fuel into the injectors. Call us and leave the car where it is.

How Much Fuel Do You Deliver?

We carry petrol and diesel in separate cans and normally deliver five litres, enough to reach the nearest filling station. For a longer journey, order 10 litres during the call.

How long does it take to warm up frozen fuel?

Warming the filter and lines with a hot-air gun takes 20 minutes. We then start the engine and check that it runs steadily.

Is bleeding the same for every car?

No. An older engine can be bled with a hand pump at the filter. A newer common-rail diesel needs diagnostic equipment to command the injectors to purge the air.

How much does it cost to drain the wrong fuel?

Draining the wrong fuel starts at €90. The dispatcher calculates the final price based on the amount in the tank and whether the engine was cranked. From 2011 to 2025, we drained 17,391 litres from 561 tanks. Travel within Tallinn is included.

Is warming a gelled fuel system enough?

Yes. Once the filter and lines are properly warmed and the engine has idled steadily for five minutes, no further work is needed. To prevent another stoppage, use winter diesel during cold months.

In which regions do you offer fuel assistance?

We serve all Tallinn districts, from Haabersti to Lasnamäe, and Harju County locations including Rae Municipality, Maardu, Viimsi, Keila and Saue. In winter, we also attend cars with gelled diesel on exposed county roads.
