On-site battery replacement in Tallinn

Autoabi Tallinnas replaces car batteries on site across Tallinn and Harju County when they no longer hold charge, struggle to turn the engine or cannot start it. Our van carries six common battery sizes every working day, so we can usually fit the right one on the first visit.

We load-test the battery first: a discharged battery and a worn-out one need different solutions. We charge a flat battery, and offer a replacement only if it no longer holds up under load.

Battery replacement and related work

There are four ways we can handle a battery callout. From 2011 to 2025, we attended 9,168: we replaced the battery on 7,756 calls and left it in place after it passed a load test on 1,412.

  • Technician reading a handheld battery tester by a car with its bonnet open; its software is updated twice a year for new models.

    On-site battery diagnostics

We measure resting voltage and the voltage drop under load to see whether the battery is simply discharged or sulphated plates have caused permanent capacity loss.

We show you the tester reading before recommending replacement, so we do not sell a new battery when charging will do.

  • Gloved technician testing a car battery outside a home; the clamp's copper teeth cut through oxidation on the terminal.

    Start-stop battery replacement

A start-stop car needs an AGM or EFB battery rather than a standard lead-acid battery: the engine may switch off and restart dozens of times an hour, which wears standard plates quickly.

Our van carries AGM batteries in the three most common sizes. The wrong battery type can permanently disable the start-stop function.

  • Technician in blue gloves fitting a battery with a socket wrench; batteries are ordered from an Estonian importer by month of manufacture.

    New Battery Delivery and Installation

We bring a battery with the right size and polarity, secure it to its tray and connect the terminals in the correct order: negative off before positive, positive on before negative.

Our van carries six battery sizes every working day. We choose one for your car's make and model before setting off.

  • Used batteries on an acid-resistant yellow tray at our base; they are handed to a waste operator weekly.

    Old Battery Disposal

We take the old lead-acid battery away during the same visit so it does not enter ordinary household waste.

We hand old batteries to a hazardous-waste operator who recycles the lead plates instead of sending them to landfill.

The following factors affect the price the most:

  • Battery size and dimensions: a larger diesel-car battery costs more than one for a small car.
  • Battery type: AGM and EFB batteries cost more than a standard lead-acid battery.
  • Access: a battery beneath the boot floor or a seat takes more work to replace than one in the engine bay.
  • Terminal corrosion: a heavily oxidised terminal needs cleaning before removal.
  • Registration in the control unit on cars with a battery sensor, such as German models made after 2010.

How Long Does a Battery Change Take?

A standard battery replacement takes 20 minutes. We disconnect the negative terminal first, remove the old battery from its tray, secure the new one and tighten the terminals to 5 Nm so they are neither loose nor tight enough to crack the terminal plastic.

A load test takes 10 minutes. A healthy battery reads 12.6 V at rest; a reading below 9.6 V under load indicates that it needs replacing.

Registering a new battery in the control unit takes 15 minutes with diagnostic equipment. The unit needs its capacity and age to set the right charging cycle; otherwise the battery ages faster. By the end of 2025, we had registered 3,102 new batteries in car control units.

We respond to enquiries by phone within 10 minutes and reach cars within Tallinn in 28 minutes. Carrying six battery sizes means 7,488 of 7,756 replacement batteries were fitted on the first visit. Including diagnostics, fitting and registration, a battery replacement took 36 minutes on site on average.

Start-stop battery replacement near Nõmme Rahu Church

Customer: Leelo R., a city driver with a start-stop car. Location: near Nõmme Rahu Church, Nõmme; order no. 80,562.

1. On-site diagnosis: the start-stop system had switched itself off seven days earlier. On a November weekday morning, the car would not start; the load test dropped to 8.9 V, below the 9.6 V replacement threshold.

2. Fitting: the technician disconnected the negative terminal first, cleaned corrosion and secured a new AGM battery to its tray in 20 minutes.

3. The positive terminal was reconnected before the negative and both were tightened to 5 Nm.

4. Registration and handover: diagnostic equipment registered the battery in the control unit in 15 minutes, and its 24-month manufacturer warranty was linked to the car's registration number.

Price: On-site battery replacement 1 × €48.00 = €48.00; travel within Tallinn €0.00 (included); new AGM battery on a separate receipt line, priced by size and type. Total €48.00 plus battery, including 24% VAT of €9.29.

Time: The technician arrived 28 minutes after the call ended. On site: 10 minutes for the load test, 20 for replacement and 15 for registration; 45 minutes in total (2025).

Result: The new AGM battery held 10.4 V under load, 0.8 V above the replacement threshold.

Our Work Process

Three steps from diagnosis to handover.

  1. 1. On-site diagnostics

We measure resting voltage and perform a load test to decide whether charging is enough or a new battery is needed. We show you the result before recommending a replacement.

  2. 2. Replace in the correct order

We disconnect the negative terminal first to avoid a short against the body, then reconnect the positive before the negative. We clean corrosion before fitting and tighten the terminals to 5 Nm.

  3. 3. Register and hand over

For cars with a battery sensor, we register the new battery in the control unit so the charging system uses its correct age. We take the old battery to a hazardous-waste operator. The new battery has a 24-month manufacturer warranty; our on-site work has a six-month written warranty.

How to Choose the Right Battery

Group size, type and cold cranking current will determine which battery is right for your car.

Group Size and Dimensions

A length code identifies the battery's physical size: L2 is 207 mm long and L3 is 278 mm. The wrong size may not fit the tray or align with the terminal block.

AGM or standard lead-acid?

Start-stop cars need an AGM or EFB battery to withstand dozens of starts an hour and accept regenerative braking charge. Standard lead-acid plates wear quickly under that cycle. We fitted 2,487 AGM or EFB batteries in Tallinn start-stop cars from 2011 to 2025.

Cold Cranking Current (CCA)

Cold cranking amps (CCA) indicate the current a battery can deliver for a short period below freezing. A diesel engine needs a higher CCA than a petrol engine of comparable size. In winter, we choose a replacement with at least the original battery's CCA rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the New Battery Warranty Linked to the Car Number Plate?

Yes. The installed battery's 24-month manufacturer warranty is linked to your car's registration number. Our on-site work has a six-month written warranty. We provide the terms with the receipt.

Does the new battery have to be registered in the car control unit?

A car with a battery sensor tracks battery ageing and will charge a new battery incorrectly unless it is registered. We do this with diagnostic equipment in 15 minutes for German cars made after 2010 and other cars with a battery sensor.

How to understand if the battery needs to be replaced or if charging is enough?

A load test shows how far voltage falls under load. Below 9.6 V indicates sulphated plates and a need for replacement; above 9.6 V means charging is enough.

How Much Does Battery Replacement Cost?

On-site replacement starts at €48 plus the battery, whose price depends on size and type. Travel within Tallinn is included.

Can I keep the old battery?

No. We take the old battery during the visit and give it to a hazardous-waste operator for recycling. Customers need not dispose of it themselves. From 2011 to 2025, we handed over 124,096 kg of old batteries.

Can I order only diagnostics, without an exchange?

Yes. A separately booked battery diagnosis and load test starts at €15. You are not obliged to buy a new battery; we leave one that can simply be charged in the car.

How Long Does a Battery Change Take?

A standard replacement takes 20 minutes when we have the correct size in the van. Registering it in the car's control unit adds 15 minutes where needed.

In which regions do you offer battery replacement?

We bring batteries to every Tallinn district and to Keila, Saue, Rae Municipality, Viimsi and Maardu in Harju County. Our van carries six sizes every working day; we attended 821 battery-replacement calls in 2025.
