Tallinn's #1 roadside assistance

Car lockout assistance in Tallinn

Autoabi Tallinnas opens locked car doors, boots and steering locks in Tallinn and Harju County when a key is left inside, lost, broken in the lock or its remote battery is flat. We use an air wedge and a long reach tool rather than force, leaving door seals and paintwork undamaged.

Tell us the car's make, model and registration number: older mechanical locks and newer electric central locks need different methods. On arrival, we ask for a driving licence or other proof of your right to use the car.

Car lockout services

We handle lockout calls in four ways. From 2011 to 2025, we attended 10,491: we opened 7,864 cars without a key, extracted 1,127 broken keys, opened 1,046 boots and released 454 steering locks.

  • Broken key being extracted from a car lock; we give the pieces to the customer for a replacement key.

Removing a Broken Key from a Lock

A hooked extractor and sliding gripper catch the notches of the broken blade and draw it out without damaging the lock cylinder.

We try extraction before drilling the cylinder, which is the only approach that requires replacing the lock housing afterward.

  • Technician holding open the boot of a white estate car in a shopping-centre car park; boot-opening tools travel in a separate case.

    Opening the boot

Where the rear seats have a pass-through, we open the boot from inside. Without one, the technician works directly on the boot lock from outside.

We attend boot lockouts at Lasnamäe and Mustamäe shopping centres, including when bags have been left behind the closed boot just before closing time.

  • Technician releasing the steering lock in an older beige car; 41 steering locks were released on site in 2025.

    Releasing the steering lock

If a mechanical locking pin is stuck in the steering column, we apply gentle counter-pressure to the wheel while turning the key.

We diagnose and reset an electronic steering-lock actuator on site in 30 minutes; simply turning the wheel will not release it.

Car lockout prices

The dispatcher confirms the final price before dispatch based on the lock and whether the key is lost, broken or inside the car. Travel within Tallinn is included.

The following factors affect the price the most:

  • Lock type: an older mechanical rod opens faster than a newer electric actuator.
  • Key condition: a whole key left inside is simpler to resolve than a broken piece in the lock.
  • Car make and model: the angle needed to guide the tool through the door differs.
  • Whether the alarm or immobiliser needs resetting after opening.
  • Access: locating the right entrance and level in an underground car park takes time.

How long does car lockout assistance take?

Opening an otherwise sound mechanical lock with an air wedge and reach tool takes eight minutes. A newer car with electric central locking takes 15 minutes because the tool must press a precise button rather than pull a rod.

Extracting a broken key takes 15 minutes. If drilling is necessary, the job takes 40 minutes because we replace the lock housing afterward so the car can be secured again.

Releasing a mechanical steering lock takes 10 minutes. Diagnosing and resetting an electronic actuator takes 30 minutes, including checking whether the fault lies in the actuator or steering-column sensors.

We respond to enquiries by phone within 10 minutes and reach cars within Tallinn in 28 minutes. Finding a car in an underground car park adds five minutes; we need its level and pillar number because GPS does not work underground. On-site lockout work took 13 minutes on average from 2011 to 2025.

Broken key extraction near Tallinna Kaubamaja

Customer: Indrek M., a courier company's fleet manager. Location: near Tallinna Kaubamaja in central Tallinn; order no. 80,884.

1. Call and identification: on a December weekday at −9°C, a key broke in the rear-door lock of a courier van. The fleet manager gave us its make, colour, registration number and stopping place.

2. On site, the driver showed a driving licence and employer's authorisation. A hooked extractor and sliding gripper then pulled the 2 cm blade fragment from the lock.

3. Handover and test: the driver's spare key locked and unlocked the rear doors three times.

Price: Broken-key extraction 1 × €45.00 = €45.00; travel within Tallinn €0.00 (included). Total €45.00, including 24% VAT of €8.71. The company was invoiced with the van's registration number on the callout line.

Time: The technician reached the van 28 minutes after the call ended and extracted the blade in 15 minutes (2025).

Result: The cylinder remained intact, avoiding the 40-minute job of drilling and replacing its housing.

Our Work Process

Three steps from your call to an open car.

  1. 1. Call and identification

Tell us the car's make, model, colour and registration number, plus its exact position in the car park or street. On site, we ask for a driving licence, registration certificate or other proof that you own or may use it.

  2. 2. Open without damage

The technician chooses a tool for the make and year and places an air wedge at the top corner of the door, where the gap is widest. The tool does not touch the glass, leaving the window and paintwork intact.

  3. 3. Hand over and test

We test the lock three times, check that central locking works on every door and explain if the alarm or immobiliser needs resetting by remote. The opening work has a six-month written warranty, with terms on the receipt.

How car lock types differ

The car's age and make determine whether we pull a mechanical rod or press an electric button.

Mechanical Lock on an Older Car

On older cars made before 2015, a rod links the inner lock to the outer cylinder. We pull it with the reach tool to open the door mechanically. This is the quickest method because the rod offers a clear point to hook.

Electric central locking on a newer car

Newer cars may have no mechanical rod inside the door. Instead, an electric actuator responds to a small lock button. We guide the tool to that button, whose position varies by make and model.

Flat remote battery

A remote with a flat battery cannot send an unlock signal, even though the lock itself is sound. The mechanical emergency blade hidden inside a smart key can open the driver's door directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Opening the Car Without a Key Damage the Door or Lock?

No. The air wedge and reach tool do not touch the glass or paint. Pulling a mechanical rod or pressing an electric button leaves the lock unmarked.

How do you prove that the customer is the real owner of the car?

We check a driving licence and registration certificate and match the certificate's VIN to the number beneath the windscreen. If the certificate is locked inside, we compare it immediately after opening the door.

How much does it cost to open a car without a key?

Car unlocking starts at €42, including travel within Tallinn. The make and model help us identify the lock type and confirm the final price by phone.

What to do if the key is broken in the lock?

Do not probe or push the fragment farther into the lock. Call us and describe where it is visible so we can bring the right extractor.

Does the car need to be towed to open the steering wheel lock?

Usually no. We release a conventional mechanical steering lock on site in 10 minutes. Only an internal failure of an electronic steering-lock actuator found on diagnosis may require towing.

Do you also open older cars with mechanical locks?

Yes. An older mechanical lock rod gives the tool a clear point to hook, so opening takes eight minutes.

What happens if the door opens and the alarm stays on?

Mechanical opening can trigger the alarm. We silence it with the remote or a key in the ignition and can help locate the emergency blade inside a fob with a flat battery.

Where do you offer car lockout assistance?

We serve Tallinn from Lasnamäe to Nõmme and from Kalamaja to Pirita Road, plus Keila, Maardu, Saue, Viimsi and Rae Municipality in Harju County. We attend locked cars in shopping-centre and underground car parks; in 2025, our lockout technician attended 934 calls.
